I am considering getting a GPS to use for paddling and maybe for backpacking.

I don’t want to spend a lot…maybe around $200-$300.

I don’t know a lot about GPS units available. Viewable map / chart capability would be nice.

Being waterproof is a necessity. Simple and easy to use are important considerations as well.

Any recommendations?

If you got the green, arguably, Garmin 60Csx and 76Csx are good ones. The 60 Csx has a $50 rebate. The 76 floats. Look at the threads and you will see that the decent Garmin software is extra.

You can buy these anywhere, the above web site is just for listing all mapping handhelds.
