Green River Utah trip

Sailboats on the Green?
As usual I think you are out of touch with reality.

River Guide
I just got my copy of Belknap’s Waterproof Canyonlands River Guide.

It has more info than I’ll ever use.

So I am making notes here and there on places to see, etc.

Anyone have this guidebook and opinions?

I do wish that it were spiral-bound at the top soI can remove the parts that I won’t need this trip, and replace them later.

Yes

Stik it tabs are handy on the river to find sections you highlighted

The Belknap is lacking detail though. I keep mixing it up with the Kelsey which we found much more interesting and useful..

Its well worth the investment if you don't want to miss some great hikes and sights.

no “RiverMaps” for that stretch

Just for the good of the order:
These RiverMaps are great -- easy to use and detailed about sights, camps, rapids (where applicable) -- I never use Belknaps; but sadly they don't have one for your stretch.

The Belknaps will be "good enough" maybe with the addition of poking around on the internet -- there seems to be pretty good info out there.

Kelsey?
Can you give me the title so I can order it?

this page has a few

thanks for the reminder ! I’ll sign up and ride some slick rock after stopping at REI for a gravity filter.

and a Geiger counter

You’re gonna love it!
I’ve done both stretches multiple times. It was my first river trip experience and my first time running a canoe.

It’s a gentle river for the most part. (only time I experienced angst was a May trip with lots of rain north of Green River so the flow volume ramped up while we were on it. (That was the mineral bottom to spanish bottom section).

Carry water. Period. You’ll need it - especially if you have not paddled a desert river. I would only filter as a last resort - and even then I’d probably boil that for good measure.

Bummed myself…I was scheduled for the entire section over 10 days late September, but it got cancelled.

Regards from somewhere on Colorado’s Continental Divide!

I bought mine there. Also, You absolutely owe it to yourself to visit before your run.

Water containers
I really like using the Coleman 5-gallon cubes. They fit beautifully up under the bow and stern section.

Yes to the Tex!
Yes, contact Tex! They’re the best…you’ll have to bring them the supplies first. Not sure if you’ve already made arrangements to get jet boated out…but if you haven’t you might be out of luck for Tex’s.

I called for an Oct. 3 pull out from Spanish and it was not available.

Couple other thoughts…
Haven’t read all the replies, but saw one about the Groove factor…yes…you need one…and

You also need a firepan for that stretch.

Recommended reading…the Powell history of that stretch…

Also, just finished editing a chapter for Author/Publisher Tom Martin of an old Doc Marston book…and researched my way to the original account of the Clyde Eddy Canyon run in '27 which started from Green River to Spanish Bottom, then on through Cataract, etc. The more recent publication of that is: A Mad, Crazy River: Running the Grand Canyon in 1927.

Great stuff!

Not really on either
a foldable roasting pan passes scrutiny unless you actually use it. Thats what the Rangers said, I swear.

And wag bags and a container negate the need for a groover.

Water is personal… no winning over anyone on that.

green green…

Right. paddling a Solstice Titan if I can get a shuttle ect. A cup of hot tea on a frosty morning.

If a MSR/butane or Coleman/propane stove is used why the pan ?

The bear barrel plus Wag Bag take out was mentioned as an approvable sanitation method. Is that correct ?

Groover ? Searched for to NRS. I could use Groover on the dry suit or http://goo.gl/Tj08eh, a substance generating copious rich earth from weed stalks, veggie cuttings.

Any word on cleaners such as Mirazyme ? If the sewers of Paris were tamed then surely my drysuit.

Are the maps from REI showing spring locations ?

"If a MSR/butane or Coleman/propane stove is used why the pan ?"

a fire pan is a required piece of equipment on many western rivers - it is required to have one regardless of whether you will have a fire or not. I guess, so that if you changed your mind about having a fire you do have a fire pan. metal oil drain pan is one of the better options.

turkey
foil pan ? recommended by Pack rafters. The area is impacted. Carbonized camping surfaces are not.

Administration a priority. I assume someone is watching for TAM bonfires.

PERMITS ?
I’m working on the permit to shuttle process…

Are permits flexible for days to launch days to run and take out ?

Specifically, a permit may specify 10/31/014 then when arriving at the shuttle provider, find the shuttle will not travel that day.

Given the alleged and apparent, the outfitters appear prosperous from Google Maps, tourist traffic, these potential rough spots are worked thru

but how ?

Yup flexible
Typically people launch a few days upstream of Canyonlands.

On the permit there is a blank for date of arrival at the border of Canyonlands and departure.

Because there can be changes… (if room on the jet boat people leave early for example, or if the road from Mineral Bottom is awash and shuttles don’t run) dates are estimates.

The BLM permit is filled out at the shuttle operators at the start of the trip if you are travelling BLM lands.

Don’t worry about that part of the permit process.

jerry cans
I have/had a collection of 5-6 gal flat water cans (plastic) but loaned most out to people who forgot to return them. One was returned, smelling of gasoline.

I finally found three hidden under my cooler, one with a hole, the other two ok so will shove a 6-gal under my canoe seat to lower CoG and improve balance. the other… probably behind my seat and in front of the ice-chest containing wine bladders filled with frozen water. Should keep the eggs cool and I can drink the melted water.
