I have the original key for my old Tu ndra. Suddenly it will not turn in the switch. I have 2 duplicates that work.
I can’t see any difference in the keys
I guess the 24 yo has some wear I can’t see. It is now permanently retired.
Depending on the lock design (sidebar, pins, wafers), the wear occurs first and mostly at the tip of the key and the front pins or wafers of the lock. The solution as you found out is new keys, but there are a few options if you find yourself having problems without the befefit of new keys.
If you lift the key or lever the tip or shoulder upward, it may compensate for the wear. You can also pull the key out just slightly so the peaks/valleys of the key push the worn pins higher to reach the shear line to open the lock. As you found out, new keys can help, especially if the key is made based on a code that cuts the blank to an original specification, rather than a trace which will duplicate the long term wear.
