Help Identifying kayak

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone could help identify this kayak and roughly how old it is? I bought it off eBay last year (in the Uk) mainly as it was cheap; I didn’t want to invest too much in a new hobby that I might not continue with. Plus it’s paid for itself a few times over based on the cost of renting one instead.

It’s 13’ long. The cockpit opening is an unusual size; 71.5cm x 40.5cm (I’ve struggled to find a skirt that’ll fit it). I’m guessing it’s from the 70’s or 80’s. It’s made of fibreglass and I think someone’s painted it as I can see from where it’s been scratched that it was originally white on top and a dull yellow on the bottom.

It has an unusual foot brace in that it’s just holes rather than pegs. It came with a piece of pipe that fitted between to make a full length foot brace which isn’t original and I’ve since adapted to make it more comfortable. It also came with a strap for the back (more like buttock) support that I’ve replaced.

Unfortunately, I didn’t make notes of what the label said before covering it with a layer of fibreglass to help reinforce the hull.

After a bit more research, I think it might be an old slalom kayak? I assume unbranded. Which would explain why it needs quite a bit of encouragement to track straight.

You may have purchased a generic or locally produced slalom-style kayak, not a mass-market model. Several UK builders (e.g., Kirton, Valley Canoe Products, or even small club workshops) produced similar designs.

Thank you. I’ve come to the same conclusion. Apparently, self-built kayaks were common back then (they made them in two halves and stuck them together) so it may be one of them, possibly built from a template.

I’ve posted a link to this in the ‘Uk Canoe Slalom Results’ facebook group and they’ve identified it as a Mendesta kayak which was (or at least the design was) imported from Belgium. After further research, I think it might be the 401 model from 1964.
