help in selecting kayak

I am looking for a kayak (or 2) to use at the jersey shore, both in the bay (mostly) or ocean (if it is tame). I like the ideal of inflatable because it is not so heavy. I am a 100% newbie… Would consider single and double or maybe two singles. I am not particularly athletic or daring. Since I’m not sure if we will like kayaking, I don’t want to spend a lot of $. What do you suggest? Any input would be appreciated. thanks!

rent,try.
There’s tons of posts on this topic, try the search feature.

Basically. Rent first. Don’t buy junky pool toy quality inflatables-first off theyre unsafe to take out in open water second they paddle nothing like a real kayak.

Rent first, see if you like the sport, go from there.

Life is good…so…
Before you go much further, you would do yourself and your loved ones a tremendous favor and take some lessons, rent some boats, and learn what you are getting into.

The type of water you are talking about is NOT like paddling in a small still pond. There are MANY decisions for you make before going forward in a safe and enjoyable fashion…but FIRST you need to learn what the questions are.

After taking some lessons from a reputable teacher and checking out a variety of boats and learning about paddling conditions, and the skills and gear needed to paddle in a various conditions…you may have fallen in love with paddling…or not. BUT…you will have learned a lot and have done it safely.

Welcome to paddling…take it slow…and easy.

Enjoy…

Do you know about sit on top kayaks?
For messing around on Delware Bay or Jersey shore look at Ocean Kayak sit-on-top kayaks the Scrambler or Frenzy would be good for what you have in mind. Check the reviews on this webpage over at the left under product reviews. Check out the website www.sit-on-topkayaking.com for general information on sit on tops and to talk to people who use them in your area. I believe the ocean kayak webpage is www.oceankayak.com

may I suggest
may I suggest going to an outfitter like

http://www.newjerseykayak.com/Kayak_Instruction.htm or http://kayakeast.com/PAGES/tours.htm

and renting, or preferably taking a guided tour. Will give you a chance to see if you like the activity…try a few boats…ask a few questions, and get your feet wet without risking your neck.

another option, both Monmouth and Ocean County offer intro kayaking trips

The first boat people try, is not usually the one they will want after even a little experience. Tandems may be fine if you have a dedicated partner that you work well with, but singles give you more paddling options. Have fun!
