History of Kayak Design....

Do you happen to have a good source?

We know the BIG names, Derek Hutchinson, Nigel Dennis, etc. But what of (what must be) tons of others? For example, I had always thought that David Hazen was responsible for designing the Wilderness Tsunami. However, recently I have been told that is not the case. Historically, there must have been crossover between canoe and kayak design, and if so, how much.

Many thanks…

For Historical Reference…

For historical reference regarding the modern day kayak, there is no better place to start than the Anas Acuta from Valley, the first commercially successful kayak, which is still being made today...

Some light reading to get you started... even more if you care to google...

Copy and past if the links don't work...

Modern day kayak design started with the Anas Acuta, which was itself based on a kayak built in Greenland using traditional methods... Derek Hutchinson, Aled Williams (NDK), Harrie Timken, Mike Necklar and all that have followed in their footsteps are all new comers to kayak design & have simply tweaked (but not necessarily improved...) on ideas which had been developed over millennia...

The same goes with paddles...

Enjoy...
