I had not even thought about sharing equipment. I tend to get everything in sight and on me loaded with salt water whenever I paddle. When I return to the cabin I immediately walk into the shower wearing all my stuff right out to neo boots, skirt and PFD to rinse. I very much doubt this virus could survive my wet mess.
But yeah, there are people especially tourists who actually aspire to stay dry paddling. Let’s hope someone has figured out that risk by summer.
Just announced that in Michigan we can once again buy paint and gardening supplies. Landscapers, lawn-service companies, plant nurseries and bike repair shops can reopen. Prohibition against motor boats and traveling between two homes in-state also lifted. Golf also allowed but no carts.
Lots of existing lawsuits will be dismissed.
House arrest extended to May 15. Face masks required in public places. I’m okay with that. Hides my wrinkles.
Golf but no carts interesting, but isn’t the biggest risk of crowding that last hole and locker rooms? Or are there restrictions on the restaurants and locker rooms at a golf club?
Restaurants have not been reopened other than takeout. Why would you need a locker room since you have your equipment with you? Obviously I don’t golf.
Actually my place already has = “Socially distancing for 100 years”. But we get old farts. Families with young kids could have real different criteria.
Looks like the owner is OK waiting for the water to come back, if he is the guy in red. And I see a lot of seaweed, I expect the boat is fine. In fairness, even people I know who have been going for decades occasionally find one of those dratted rocks at low tide.
That does not look like scheduled hull maintenance. Usually a beach is picked and a king tide for best results for a quick hull fix.
The signs coming into NH say non residents must quarantine for 14 days. I did not do that we just drove down through a very shuttered North Conway and back into Maine where we were again told we must quarantine 14 days. Wonder how that will sit with tourists? Took a 100 mile drive to get very special pie and maple creme cookies.
No predictions. On the daily briefing Dr Shah replied to a question about where we are on the curve something to the effect of “Only charlatans and liars pretend to know everything” I was driving and no chance to take notes!
That said I am off to ingest my 5pm Clorox
Edit. The White Mountain National Forest just shut down most of the accessible by road trails due to people being unable to keep apart. I did see many Mass plates today. Parking areas are all closed. I hope that the border stays open. It may not for some coming from hot bed states. See what Dr Shah said… It is fluid… I may be all full of S.
I think the larger question for midcoast and up in Maine, and lots of places in NH, is more what will owners of rental properties do. Is it reasonable or likely that the families which own some of the motels on rte 1 toward Camden will try to make people stay in their rooms and only eat by ordering food while they are there? If enforcement is expected, the families owning these properties might be on the hook for oversight. The poor schmos likely can neither do that, nor afford the financial loss of no rentals.
The license plates in those motels are not from Maine.
That is why I think a lot of this will come down to pressure from voters and municipalities as the window of maximum earnings approaches. July and August.
Decisions here will not come from the voters. It will come from the Maine CDC and the Governor will follow suit.
It will be based on what is going in in Mass and New Brunswick I bet. NB is closing mass gathering places for the remainder of the year. They rely on tourism.
Mass is having outbreaks.
No one is held hostage in hotel rooms’ We already have out of state essential workers staying in them. Lots of people living here have out of state plates.
Try not to let fears over rule you… Get outside. Go paddling
Janet Mills is Governor. She is blue. Your post is a low blow. But since you are a moderator you can be special.
No we do not live in a police state. Civility still is a rule bur of course you will cherry pick the 250 protestors in Augusta.
On reopening and how it might happen regarding paddling and associated services. Not going to reinvent the wheel here, but Cuomo is doing his presser right now including charts and graphs and CDC guidelines. A serious assortment of numeric criteria. I have to assume that this information on criteria is also in the dialogue between NY, MA, CT, NJ etc. These briefings can be found under his web site by searching for Past Coronavirus Briefings.
Given the miles of shoreline in these states, the numeric criteria may be useful for other’s planning.
We’ve babbled on about Maine because it’s such a beautiful place to kayak and some of us hope we can get there to kayak this summer. But the state economy is so dependent on summer tourism with an uncertain future this year. This article today in the Portland newspaper says one study finds Maine’s economy could be the worst affected of all 50 states this summer. Let’s all hope for the best that the lodging and restaurant businesses can find some way to make a season out of it. Regardless of whether I can kayak in Maine this year, it hurts to see a state I’m fond of facing an uncertain summer.
I have already made some phone calls to confirm ways to use local small businesses where I vacation. Assuming I can rent. With the likelihood of restricted hours, access via curbside pickup, the basic process of patronizing some of these places is going to be quite different. And places like my favorite farm stand are questioning whether they will be able to handle their usual number of summer customers.
This kind of early conversation would work for most vacation spots. I suggest it where you can. So far these small businesses have welcomed my trying to work with them.
Here in southern WV the “rafting industry” will take a hit. I have a buddy who owns a company and he says reservations for the future are simply nonexistent. Typically small groups are combined to fill rafts and then there’s the whole school bus shuttle experience. All of that will be problematic for a while .He applied early on to get the feds small business loan but is waiting on all of that to be processed, approved and granted. He’s surprisingly calm despite all of this. Tourism is a significant part of our economy and tends to be seasonal - our normal is free breakfast and lunches for all kids at school, Even backpacks are sent home on fridays with additional food for kids on a normal school week. That has just now expanded a bit with parents picking up food for the week. My neighbor tried to get through to unemployment and was unsuccessful. I am amazed at the number of places that are still open and considered “essential businesses”.
We are all wrong when we speculate so I am not opining any more… I posted in another new thread what our state plans are. Tourism is essentially going to be severely dampened.
