How to beat the heat

KEEPING YOUR COOL IN THE HEAT

Since we’re experiencing a major heat wave in various parts of the country, I thought it would be a good time to revisit heat stress. In a nutshell, heat stress places a burden on your heart and blood vessels. It consequently diminishes both comfort and athletic performance. Fortunately there’s an easy workaround, and it’s especially easy for paddlers: Evaporation.

Using evaporative cooling to avoid heat stress is a fundamental outdoor skill. We have an entire section on our web site that walks you through the process: https://www.coldwatersafety.org/hot-weather.

If you’re new to this concept, just give it a try. I guarantee that it’s a game-changer. You can use it working around the house, on the trail, or while paddling. Be cool out there, mates!

yes… Cotton does not always kill. I like closely woven twill shirts… like old fashioned oxford office shirts… Not poly’ Not cotton T shirts as they weave of the cotton jersey causes the shirt to hang on to its dampness.
