I like this "Rock Gardening" stuff

I was able to convince one of the more experience sea kayakers in our club to take me out on an easy rock gardening trip in his tandem Tsunami sea kayak – what a blast! We were playing in the rocks off Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, RI. Hate to say it, but I may need to invest in a sea kayak. Trip report is here:

I didn’t get the good stuff - kind of like whitewater with ocean waves.

the good stuff is often not photographed. Better to focus on the task at hand than worry about photos.

It is great fun! Just have to not be too obsessive about getting new scratches.

Here is some extreme rock gardening.

Cool - nothing like that yesterday, but it was still fun.

Welcome to the dark side!

Yeah, it’s addictive and there are plenty of places to do it all up and down the New England coast.

I’m a canoe Jekyll and kayak Hyde myself.

Two hands for paddle, one hand for camera usually leaves me a little short handed.

Wow. Blast from the past. I miss Tony and his Tsunami. He was one of the original members of RI Surf Kayakers (RISK) and the subsequent New England Surf Kayaker group.

Say hi and Cowabunga! for me next time you see Tony.

I don’t usually think of an Epic V10 as a rock gardening boat.

Nice pictures - thanks.

Funny you know Tony - it’s a small (paddling) world. Great guy - it was fun to go out with him.

Edit: the surf skis - there was a race that day.

We were in a 20’ tandem Tsunami sea kayak that was a little tight at times - like at about 0:49 here:

This was the gap at the end of Horsehead just east of Mackerel Cove. It was easy to go through with the current - a little trickier against the current. Took us a while to line the boat up so we could paddle back out.

it’s even a “smaller” world for those who would rather paddle more “textured” water.

Think I’d rather take the 14 ft’r than a 20 ft tandem.

It was a little tight around the rocks, but we moved fast in open water.
