I need a bigger paddle with more torque for my 240 pound self on my Jackson Journey 14

Yep, I used kayaklog on my iPhone for a while but I couldn’t figure out how to get it to track my heart rate. :open_mouth:

I also like that the Garmin only needs to be charged weekly or so.

Got lost in Rome, but had the GPS in my backpack! Managed to find my way back to our hotel. Does the wrist unit have maps?

You can click anywhere on your track map and see your speed.

Some of them do. There’s a guy who does really great walk-through product reviews. Much better than reading the instructions that come with the gizmo. Here’s his section on Garmin: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-reviews/garmin

The one I have doesn’t, but it’s really an activity tracker and the device and its screen are small - it’s designed to be worn like a watch when running or doing other exercise. When your activity is finished the device syncs wirelessly to a smart phone (or PC) and the results are stored on Garmin’s cloud. An app (or website) displays all the details. It’s good for seeing where you’ve been but it’s no route planner.

For maps I just fire up Google Earth on an iPhone although in the car I prefer a dedicated Garmin GPS navigator.

Try any yet?

I don’t think there would be a lot of correlation between Euro and a GP in regards to sq in in the blade. I don’t know much about GP and I never used one. I am thinking that how much and when a blade becomes effective. Your thoughts?

If you use a Greenland paddle you likely have a high angle stroke and run your hands all over the paddle. Sometimes it is a 230cm single blade paddle. There really isn’t any correlation. It’s magic.

The sq inch key is that skeptics first say the paddle is too little to work.

No…the past 2 Weeks have been nothing but thunderstorms and fronts…in fact I was lucky to get out there the last 3 times due to the bad weather we have been experiencing ever since mid July…this has been a horrible Month for sure and it still looks like it may be about another Week of Thunderstorms before I finally get out there again. That is the wonderful tropical weather we have down here in Louisiana…last year we had 2 major floods in areas we have never seen ever in the Southeast of Louisiana. We live on very high ground and have been here for over 30 years and this was a first…it made news nationwide…and once we recovered somewhat from that one…then not even a few Months later another flood came in that was just as bad and destroyed everything including our home all over again. Many businesses are still gone from this and people had even died from these tragic floods we had. It was a stressful year in 2016 for me and my Family…thankfully we were able to fully have out house fixed from wall damage from the 4 feet of water we got in the house (we live in a 2 story house so we all lived upstairs and shared a bathroom). Well now as of 2 Weeks ago the house looks brand new again and I am in my huge beautiful room again with my own bathroom/shower/and even my own kitchen. It has been about a year and a half since I have had my room/bathroom/privacy given back to me…a decent sized house but still modest. It feels nice but having this weather like this is kinda scary as we do not need more floods but that is just the paranoia in me…we will be fine.

We will be moving to Utah where I used to live hopefully within the next couple of years. I love the South believe me…but I am more of a Northern person as I prefer cold weather and I have so much more I can do in Utah especially around my favorite place in America…the “Wasatch Range” in Utah…God I love it there I visit twice a year and that is still not enough for me…in fact later this year I am visiting a friend who white water Kayaks the Wasatch Range…he starts in Coalville then goes all the way up to Park City…that is the route we will be Kayaking…and he is going to let me borrow one of his Kayaks and I’ll just have to buy a helmet and have the time of my life. I will not be stupid and do super rough white water but at the same time he told me I am going to have a blast.

Believe me…the first Morning I wake up and see sunshine (which I and many others right now need in many parts of Louisiana due to lack of sunlight in a bad way) and no longer feel rain or drizzle along with those hard winds we have been dealing with from fronts we have been getting I am loading my Kayak up and am going to drive right out there and finally give these “Corryvreckan’s” a try…I do not care if I am needed somewhere else I am calling in sick, I really want to get out there in my Kayak…and I am highly excited about trying out these paddles I mean this paddle feels powerful just holding it as opposed to the Stingray Hybrid I was using…this is probably just something in my head but I can seriously feel a more powerful paddle when I snap it together and just hold it up and “air paddle” …pretty much the same thing as “air guitaring” only I never knock stuff over when I am “air guitaring” lol.
Lack of sunlight really sucks as everyone starts feeling kinda drained/you no longer sleep the same/the body wants to shut down as the immune system is not up to par and then you get all these people (admittedly myself) with bad attitudes I mean lack of vitamins from the sun for 2 Weeks straight is just not healthy we all need the Vitamin D and not in pill form but from the sun itself. I do keep going to the gym but my energy is a little low again from lack of sunlight and motivation from not Kayaking I mean I took up the sport of Kayaking with open arms and loved it from day one…what can I say I am a natural.

I will update once I have given both Corryvreckan’s (210cm and 220cm) a try. Cool stuff.

Weather can be bad sorry to hear. Saw it on news. One of my houses was flooded during hurricane Sandy entire bottom wiped out after just being remodeled for 250 3 years earlier. Had every receipt but still ended up in major fight and delay with insurance company. Wanted to settle for 50 grand less. Said see you in court it’s all done now anyway. They hold people hostage and make them settle for less. They paid three weeks later. Put tracker app in phone.

Just a comment on the effectiveness of a GP - the Inuits used them quite effectively for far more rigorous needs than most current sea kayakers do. They propelled larger boats that carried whole families as well as smaller sleeker hunting boats that chased and captured hefty seals. Unclear why there would be a concern about whether they are effective. Technique needed yes, but no reason to questions the success of the design itself.

A. Boats too short. Length/width ratio is in the 6-7. You need a boat around 9.
B. I’m your ht. And wt. Short paddles , no matter what convention says, suck. I paddle a 230, green land. It has more sq inches of area than most euro paddles. Paddles are real personal choice.
C. Consider a real sea kayak in the 17 ft range with 23-24" beam.
D. Map my ride app on your phone will track distance, splits and speed.

The only thing I fear is my expensive iPhone getting ruined from getting wet…even if they are able to be fixed with the rice method. I am sporting a Dinosaur iPhone 5 and do not want to spend so much money on a newer one they just cost too much…that is money I can put towards a dry suit or jacket of some sort…and a decent GoPro which would be so much more important to me than having a newer cell phone. My iPhone 5 works great but most apps will not work as we are living in a World now where if a computer device is only 2 years old they are considered to be Dinosaur fossils, lol.

Anyway I think I will be getting me a GoPro Hero 5 Black and use the Garmin VIRB Edit software… I can then just simply do quick edits on my videos I have recorded and drop in a speed tracker among other things. I have seen the Hero 5 Black work with the Garmin VIRB Edit software on youtube videos and it looks pretty amazing to me. It can record 4K video at 30 FPS or my favorite being that it can also record 1080 at 60 FPS. My eyes really prefer the 1080 60 FPS option over 4K video for watching youtube videos so yes this will probably be my very first camera for making youtube videos. I really cannot wait to start recording videos of the beautiful scenery that we have in the South. I can finally become a youtuber as well as opposed to just watching other people’s videos. In Louisiana especially during the Winter they have some beautiful Swampy areas that run right along the Lake.

Here is a video of one of the most beautiful Kayaking videos in Louisiana…I mean a Hauntingly Beautiful area…and am already planning for this trip during the Winter as when it is cold all the leaves dies allowing the sunlight to come in…not to mention most if not all alligators during this time of year are nestled up in the caves, lol: This would be a perfect spot for recording some videos with the GoPro Hero 5 Black. The quality I have seen with those in more recent videos with 1080 with 60fps is superb.

I know I changed the topic here but still today I almost got to Kayak as the sun was out then right as I was getting everything ready to go out I started seeing the dark clouds coming along with winds…today’s forecast as well as for the rest of the Week is going to be pretty sucky. I will wait patiently regardless. I am no longer stressing over paddle length so much now. I’ll try both lengths and I think I still am going to prefer the longer 220cm for my longer ventures but I have plenty of time to test them out there is no rush.

We have swamps like that. My favorite time to paddle there is Spring.

Yes that sounds like it would be perfect as it is just starting to warm up however the leaves for the most part are still dead so you still get in that beautiful sunlight as opposed to the Summer where everything is all grown over making everything dark…not to mention mosquitos oh and did I mention Alligators? lol Funny thing is I have actually hunted and caught by hand alligators (smaller ones honestly I am not that crazy) with some cajun family of mine and we would take the tail and cut it up and make chicken nuggets out of of them…the taste is dynamite much better than Wendy’s. …however I am still kinda hesitant to Kayak around them even though they are actually quite tame unless really provoked. My luck they will love the way I smell and I’ll be making the evening news for man murdered and eaten by a family of Gators…but I’ll be doing the Rivers during the Summer time regardless and just put all that fear aside…of course nothing wrong with being overly cautious however…
Life is too short to live in fear

Lifeproof iPhone cases are waterproof and they make one for the 5…

Or, if you want a really inexpensive solution, buy a Joto universal case for $6 from Amazon…

The correct paddle length is the shortest possible that still immerses the entire blade in the water as you use it. It’s a function of length of torso, arm length and how high you are sitting off the water.

I use drypak above 10-12 bucks on eBay with cord. Your phone will probably run a tracking app.

Blade just below the surface as stated above and if your paddle is to long you will tire faster and it will slow you cadence.

Never tried a GP paddle but never saw anyone race with one. Inuits had no choice so they used what they had… Yes some like them for a number of reasons easier on arms, easier to roll with, not high angle, how would you measure blade on GP paddle? I see blade width listed and loom length not blade length. How much h of the paddle is in the water up to the loom? I can’t remember from videos I have.

Greg Stamer and Wayne Albert are two very successful racers who use a Greenland. They also have impeccable technique.

A GP works very well with a high angle stroke.

An interesting blog about GP speed:
http://gnarlydognews.blogspot.com/2013/12/technique-greenland-paddle-speed.html

I can paddle faster with my Werner and I feel more secure with it in conditions (because my Greenland technique is mediocre at best), but for distance and headwinds I’ll always opt for my GP.
