Inherited boats

Hi all,

After the passing my father I inherited some boats which have not been used in a while

One of them is a 1976 Grand Laker canoe (19 ft) —interior is in great shape, but the exterior canvas shows minor wear. There is also a slight gouge where you would put the motor, but other than that, the boat is in very good shape. I thought Paddling.com would be the perfect place to post it, but every time I try to submit a classified ad, I get an “Internal Server Error.”

Is anyone else having this issue, or is it just me?

Also, I’d love some guidance:

  • What would be a fair price range for a boat like this in its current condition?
  • Are there any other websites, forums, or groups where folks seriously interested in classic wooden canoes hang out?
  • Do Grand Lakers tend to move at all outside of northern Maine?

Thanks in advance—I really appreciate any insight this community can offer!

McCarvell,
Before you sell the Grand Laker, borrow an outboard and take it out and run it.
I really like big canoes. That one belongs on a trailer. I would keep it in a heartbeat.
But I am on the West Coast.

I took a look at that site but had a few issues

  1. Had to pay to list
  2. Was not sure how much traction the site gets
  3. Saw a decent amount of older listings and did not like the layout of how the site looked (site looked like it was from 1997 with links that were broken as well)

I have taken the boat out before, and it does well in all the lakes in Maine. We used a Johnson 6 on it, but my dad bought a 9.9, but he never had a chance to use it before he passed.

The problem is I have three old wooden canoes and only one trailer. Agreed, though that it does need a trailer.

As much as I would like to use it, I need to get rid of at least two of the canoes, as I don’t have the space for all three.

Shoot them an email. Ask them who you should contact. Or Google manufactures of wood & canvas canoes. They live and breathe this every day. They may have a customer who wants one and can arrange a sale, for a price.
