Is it possible to obtain title for used Kayak

Evening again,

I have an Old town Dirigo I bought used last year, Florida law requires motorized vessels to be registered, if I wanted to put a trollin motor on my kayak I would have to register it.
Is it possible to obtain a title so I can legally
Register to do this? If so what would simplest way be? Thank you. I would call old town and ask but I don’t know if that’s even something they can help with and they are closed till Monday as well

I think Old Town is the only one that could help. Some maufacturerers are helpful with that but some aren’t. Good luck!

You should consult with the boat registration/ titling people in your state on the process of acquiring a title. Here in SC I have had two sailboats that needed registration one was built before HIN numbers were required on all boats and another was home built but never registered. The state issued a state HIN on one and registered the other so I could be legal.

The local authorities should be able to help with this. It’s not that much of an unusual situation. If you have any information on who you bought it from that would be useful, bill of sale, cancelled check, name and address, etc. It would not be unusual if the boat were not required to be registered at the time of sale and now the seller could not be found.

The only information that Old Town might have is the original person or retailer that they sold it to, possibly in the form of a manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO) . They don’t track subsequent sales. Information on an MSO is HERE. Being originally a non-powered boat, an MSO might not have been required. Normally, non-motor-powered canoes, kayaks, racing shells or rowing sculls regardless of length are not required to have an MSO or be registered.

The local authorities might want to inspect the boat and do a quick check that it hasn’t been reported as stolen at some point and that the HIN matches your registration information.

No need to guess, check with the State of Florida as to what you need. Other people have to have had the same problem. As an example, home made boats do not have titles.

I believe registration is mostly required to provide proof of ownership (and to provide some tax revenue).

Florida requirements for registration.

I assume they have a workaround if you do not have a bill of sale, but it probably takes time and is more difficult.
