What do you Jeep drivers recommended as a two-kayak carrier for a Jeep Wrangler with a soft top? The only one I’ve been able to find online is the Lange Originals Rig-A-Rack. Pretty pricey.

Any kind of rack you get is going to cost you.
There are a number of companies that make roof rack systems that you can adapt saddles or “J” carriers to. Bestop and Kargo Master are two of them I can think of right now.
Personally, If Ive got the top down, I use the windshield and rollbar with foam blocks. If the top is up, I put the boats on a trailer.

that’s cheap. doesn’t look like anything i’d buy though. far better (and far more pricey) is this rack. http://www.topfiveracks.com/ been using it with Malone J-carriers for 15 years and love it.
carrying kayaks with wrnagler
I too have a wrangler and have looked at the racks available. I don’t have a kayak yet, but my intention is to buy a small utility trailer. There is a guy on ebay that makes racks to attach to the traielr and you can still put stuff on the trailer underneath. I plan to get the trailer for carrying camping stuff anyway, so this will work wonderfully. The racks he sells are like $50-60.
