kayak instruction-East Texas

Anyone know of kayak instruction available in East Texas? The DFW area is a little inconvenient. Thanks

East Texas is a big place…I’m in
Kingwood, the southern extreme of E. Texas. The Houston Canoe Club sometimes has instructions…hcc.com. Also, you can check with Fishing Tackle Unlimited in Houston…or check out texaskayakfisherman.com, a kayak fishing website sponsered in part by FTU. There is/was a thread on a kayak paddling seminar sometime in April. Don’t recall the name, but there is a kayak/canoe dealer in Beaumont that may know something.

Here’s a copy of the post about the
kayak instruction class…

TKF and Ocean Kayaks are proud to present Paddling Safety 101.

This class will be taught by ACA certified instructors. This will be a basic ACA “Quick Start” class with some extra emphasis on safety and deep water recovery.

Class size will be strictly limited to 20 participants. (The first 20 paid entrants will have a spot reserved, we will fill canceled spots on a first come, first served basis).

DATE: Sunday June 11

TIME: 9 am to 3:30pm

Lead Instructor: Karla Klay

Karla will have 3 of her own seasoned (ACA certified instructors)assistants, and we hope to have TKF’s Pogo and Doug Poudre assist as well. I’ll be there to heckle and harass all the participants and facilitate the event.

Location: Galveston Island. The specific location will be at the TAMU facilities. We will post a map ASAP. There will be a brief classroom session, followed by on the water training. Bathroom facilities will be availible for changing from your wet clothes, etc.

Fee: $20.00 per person

(All proceeds will go directly to funding the event, help compensate the instructors, and pay for the TAMU facilities.)

We will be taking payment via check at:

Jeff Herman (make checks payable to Jeff Herman too)

PO Box 541283

Houston, TX 77254

I will highlight the sign up sheet, marking you as confirmed once I receive your check.

All participants must bring their own kayak, paddle, pfd, and change of clothes. TKF will provide drinks and snacks.

I hope to have some great raffle items for the participants too. It will be a closed raffle, (you must attend the class to be eligible) and everyone will get one ticket with their registration fee. Additional tickets will be available for 5 bucks at the event. Man, those are good odds!

If we fill this class, and have an enthusiastic response, I will try and hold this event twice a year.

Thanks ya’ll!

Better hurry, the response to the class is strong. Got to texaskayakfisherman.com for more info.

Thanks very much
I should have been more specific. I am in northeast Texas. Also, don’t know how I managed to select whitewater category. I am nowhere near ready for whitewater. Thanks again.

In Northeast Texas, I might look at

Shreveport and what may be available there, though I don't see any kayaks on the road when I go pick up my son at Ruston (La. Tech.) Don't know if that's any closer than Dallas to you, but...And the only kayak dealers I know of there are either Bass Pro or Academy, neither seem to interested in kayak instruction, just sales. Here's a link to a news report on kayaking that may help, mentions something called the Ozark Society in Shreveport.

Thanks very much
I had thought about Shreveport but had struck out. I will follow up on this info. I do appreciate it.

BTW, I’m an old guy too, maybe they need
a special class for old guys new to kayaking who may not be quite as nimble as the younger ones.
