Kayaking in the Humboldt Park Lagoon (Chicago Parks)

Hello! I know this isn’t technically “wilderness tripping.” Still, I’m curious if anyone has a perspective about kayaking in the Chicago Park district parks such as Humboldt Lagoon, Washington Park, Garfield Park, etc.? I live very close to the pond and very severely want to paddle around the town legally. Do any of you do this? I’d love to learn about your experiences and thoughts on this topic. Thank you!

I am not sure. I know that they rent paddle boats during the summer for people to go out on. I have heard people tell me they saw some one in a kayak a couple days ago. I’m think about putting in and seeing if anyone says anything. I’ll let you know what happens.

I’ve paddled in spots like Humboldt Lagoon and Washington Park Lagoon a few times. They’re pretty calm, with no major currents, so it’s a good place to practice or just enjoy the scenery. The biggest thing to keep in mind is the need to check with the Park District about permits or any restrictions—some areas require them for access or use.

Garfield Park is another cool spot if you’re near it, and while it’s not the same as the open water or whitewater rivers, there’s still something peaceful about gliding around a lagoon surrounded by urban greenery. You’ll probably find a handful of other local paddlers, especially when the weather’s nice. Just be mindful of boat traffic, like rowers or other recreational users.

As for paddling legally, you’ll definitely want to make sure you’re in the right zones, as some areas may have restrictions on certain water activities. But overall, it’s a nice way to enjoy a bit of nature right in the city. Go for it, and enjoy the experience!

No question. This is 5 minutes from the house. Just because it is not a pure “ Wilderness Experience,” does not mean it is not an experience. It is easily accessible without making elaborate plans, using up a lot of time or having to organize with a lot of people. It gets you on the water when otherwise you would not be able to. That in and of itself makes it important. It is also interesting to paddle a bayou or pond in a natural setting in an urban surrounding with other things going on around you that pop up from time to time. You can make it a regular routine.

In this park, you can put on your spray skirt and go in and out of the fountain. You won’t find that on many rivers.
