Kayaking with a self-righting life jacket

I am in search of recommendations for a self-righting life jacket that would be practical for use in a kayak. The bulky rescue Jackets are just not practical nor the “toilet seat” style (as my parents nicknamed them). A self-inflating won’t work because inevitably it would get wet and activate. I need something that will work despite the paddler being temporarily unconscious (less than a minute). Chances are, they most likely would not come out of their boat so that may be a good thing or bad.

Pick any US Coast Guard approved PFD. Check that the fit is secure and comfortable. Pick a model with features that suit your needs. Realize that all PFDs are not designed to keep your face out of water. They’re just a balance between comfort and minimal assistance in keeping you afloat.

It’s easy enough to find out on a million websites but Type I will turn most unconscious upright, Type II will turn some unconscious upright. Neither one is considered comfortable to wear for most any activity other than waiting to be rescued. That’s the trade off with Type III in that they are suitable for activity but not if you are unconscious. Same with Type III inflatables and Type V.

As @RC51Mike said, a Type I life jacket is what you’d want. Possibly a Type II.

Here is info on types of life jackets

The performance levels (the number of newtons) is new to me. Never seen that talked about.

Type I life jackets are the bulky ones with the large collars - those collars are part of what keeps the face out. Most paddlers use Type III, as they are much more comfortable. Risk we are taking is if we are unconscious, we would drown if we are face down. So finding one that does flip someone face up and also is not bulky/uncomfortabe will be a challenge.

On plus side, inflatables nowadays aren’t triggered by getting wet, but by submersion. I use when sailing and we do get splashed and they don’t trip. But I don’t think inflatables are made to flip someone upright but maybe I am wrong.
