Lake Erie

I recently purchased a Mainstream SOT Kingfisher. I took it on vacation to Panama City Beach and had a blast fishing a half mile off shore in some pretty good rolling wave action.

I live in central Ohio and was wondering if Walleye fishing out of this sit on top kayak is something that is doable on lake Erie. I am just looking for some feed back from anyone who may have tried this. I have read where some have traveled across to South Bass Island on a kayak. Is this something that is common on Erie?

Years ago I used to take a 20 foot power boat up there and have seen the lake change from relatively calm to 4-5 foot waves pretty quickly. In a power boat you can pretty much beat it into shore quickly but in a kayak I would be stuck to ride it out. Anyone here into this or is it a lame idea?

Don’t know much about L. Erie, but
understand that its a faily shallow water body of water, much like our Gulf of Mexico here in Texas. The waves get big and rough in just a bit when the wind starts going. But, that said, the Kingfisher, an economical fishing craft, slow, but a great fishing platform, is one of those often selected by Texas Gulf fishermen that fish beyond the breakers…out beyond where the waves begin to break before coming on shore. It takes waves well and wll get through the surf. The water goes back through the scupper holes. But, like any small craft, big waves and bad weather are no place for it. Randino over on Bicker and Banter has paddled L. Erie in a canoe, so he may be able to tell you more. As far as fishing from the Kingfisher, enjoy, wear your PFD, and be careful.

Thanks
Thank you for the reply Jerry. I will look for the person you mentioned and try to get some advice from him.
