Another twist on cold water safety. Water temps down at the beach had worked up to 77F (great for swimming) and then we got some wind that kicked up some of the deep water and beach water temps dropped to 55…now up to 57 a few days later. 77 is refreshing but 55 is back to dangerous and also makes people yell more plus it makes body parts shrivel up.
Similar happening up here the other day. Water temp was 68F and dropped to 55. Last checked showed it had warmed up again.
Also had a seiche early a.m. July 22 which wiped out all the docks in an area of Little Traverse Bay as well as moving some moored boats up on the shore. The high water levels no doubt helped in the destruction.
yup… Upwelling. Happens most every year…
Thanks, Rookie; I had to look up ‘seiche’ … good thing to know about. And apparently the National Ocean Service (another thing I didn’t know about) considers Lake Erie to be ocean-like.

Video of 2014 seiche. Same area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8bU08TUs_0
Fortunately most of the moored boats had been taken out for the season or there may have been a few sitting on those manicured lawns.
