Not a bad way to close out the summer – chest to occasional headsets for a departing Hurricane Humberto. Sunny skies, 85 degrees and a slight offshore breeze. Lots of folks (compared to winter surf) but a beach break is perfect for that in offering lots of space.
Hadn’t paddle surf since last spring. Spent all all summer fishing off my Hobie Revo. The rust showed. First wipe-out, I blew two sequential rolls and then got trashed when I bailed. I paddled back out beyond the breakzone and practiced several rolls on each side, and then all was right with surfing again (no more blown rolls after). Three hours of non-stop surfing. My aging body felt it afterwards.
Although summer is officially over, the Atlantic Hurricane season is not. Several tropical systems are churning out there. Looks tobe more surf towards the end of this week.
Yeah, I am ok “wind-wise” since I bike commute daily and have been pedaling (not paddling) my Hobie with weekend fishing trips. Problem is upper body stiffness and the lack of gripping (?) endurance. Got really sore from torqueing the waveski on the waves and rolling, and finally petering out with my grip. Towards the end of the session, my fingers were cramping up into a claw like appendages.
Hope you got your ration of paddling in this summer.
TS Karen can’t figure where she wants to go… I think she’ll still throw up some texture in the Atlantic for NE surf paddlers, late weekend into early next week.
Hurricane Lorenzo will stay a mid-Atlantic fish storm – Thank goodness for the Carribean neighbors and SE US. I’m sure any of these places can take a fit at this point.
Hey Sing I was wondering how you were making out with the hurricanes. I’ve been surfing my waveski again for about a month after mostly SUP surfing for 2 years. I forgot how much better I am as a butt surfer as opposed to a SUP surfer. We had one really good morning with pealing barreling waves a couple of weeks ago, I was able to get locked in the curl and let my stinger style ski rip right in front of the pocket, then cut back and re-enter and then kick out. Forgot how fast you feel and how fast that initial acceleration and bottom turn are. I and two other board surfers I was trading waves with were in a zone that is off limits to surfing after 9:00 AM and the lifeguard let me know when I came in that they didn’t kick us out because they were enjoying the show and tourists were filming with a big camera. I’m pretty sure the tourists were just waiting for wipeouts. My neck, back and gripping tendons were killing me for a couple of weeks but I seem to be getting some flexibility back. Kind of surprising how age creeps up and kicks you in the butt when you don’t keep up with the same activity level.

Hey, glad you’re back on the ski again and regaining! I know surf stoke motivates me to keep to some physical level of training (my blown knee is getting worse tho…) I have been slacking off the post-workout stretches and can feel that in the core. Time to step it up a bit.
We have 15 plus second swells beginning show. Product of Hurricane Lorenzo. Peaking in the next several days. Having a busy week buy am trying to figure out a way to squeeze in a dawn patrol.
