Looking for a warm weather balaclava

I hate using sunblock, I absolutely hate it. Applying that slime to my body makes the very skin I’m trying to protect crawl. =)

I generally wear gloves and long sleeves, even in warm/hot weather, but I’m finding that protecting my face, ears and neck is a bit of a challenge.

Does anyone make a super lightweight balaclava, or similar product, that I can use to cover these sensitive areas?? Perhaps something made of Hydro-Silk?

I’m planning to invest in a buoyant, wide-brim hat, but would love to find something super lightweight that I could slip over my head to protect me from the harmful UV’s yet not get in the way should I go for an unexpected swim.

Tim,

I have another version of something like what's at this link. I liked it better for backpacking than for paddling - the wind moved it around a lot, which was noisy. Maybe this version has a quieter fabric.

This one may be more to your liking.

This is similar to mine.

What gloves do you wear in warm weather?

I have a lightweight balaclava
I bought at a bike store: Roxx. Don’t know if it is still available.

You could just wear
Whatever sun hat you like, and get a Coolmax UV Pro Buff. I have several, and they are really versitile and comfy:

Keffiyeh
a.k.a Ghutrah or (Ya)sh(e)magh Ggoogle it… Proven over thousands of years…

P.S. Remember to wear sun glasses to protect your eyes, cataracts and pterygia are preventable. I wish I knew this when I was younger.

Mike

Buy them here …
These guys know oppressive heat in the hot sun …

in my experience
warm weather in SF Bay is not the same as warm weather in Central IL. Read “warm” advisedly.

Survivor Buff
I would suggest a buff like they use on survivor. They sell them at CBS web site. It is basicaly a tube that can be made a scarf, hat, or baca. I used as a baca under my goaltending mask when I play outdoor hockey in the winter. it is thin enough to fit under the mask and down past my neck to keep the heat in. it is very light and would work good as a sun protector.

Probably the wrong kind.

I wear full length diving gloves I picked up at my local dive shop (Diver Dan's).
I had a store credit from a dive class I never took, so it was a no brainer where to get the gear. =)~

I like the idea of the buff with a good sun hat. I'll start looking around. (for a site that lists them in US dollars). ;-/

Thanks for the links, Dave.

I hadn’t thought about it before,
but I suppose in the summertime the honey would be runnier, making it more sticky. Maybe in the summer it would make sense to cut back on the honey and increase the phyllo and nuts. Call it a summer baklava.

Sun Protection
Im your average Irish American Redhead with an extremely fair complexion. Staying active outdoors without getting burned, has been a lifetime pursuit.

Yes I hate sunscreen with a passion too, rubbing SPF 50 over your skin is like rubbing white axlegrease on your body.

The way to enjoy the outdoors while minimizing sun expozure is to use solumbra fabrics. Google Sun Precautions to check out their catalog. I have used their products for years with good success. good Luck!

They also have same thing with integrated cap, and an item that is just a face shield that leave ears out that might be good under a wide brim hat. Stuff for hands/arms too, besides some decent pretty clothes. Not the cheapest stuff, but I love their swim shirts (like a rashguard, but with looser fit).
