Malone kayak channel loader - getting cups to stick

When the Malone suction cups are stuck on my rear window, the thing works great. But getting them to stick is a BIG PAIN. I clean the window thoroughly, and then moisten the rubber pads. I push hard on the pads, flip the suction lever and, most of the time, the pad doesn’t stick securely. I can take many minutes trying it over and over again. I’ve brushed the pads with lube oil, which they seem to suck up nicely, and they still don’t work well. I tried lubing the pads before affixing them on the window, which seems to work OK, but then I end up with a greasy window. Are there secrets here?

Getting suction cups or the glass surface a little wet -with water- usually helps suction cups stick to things. Also, make sure the pressure you are putting on the cups while you throw the lever is evenly centered. That’s usually my biggest problem with getting them to stick to my rear window.

What are you cleaning your window with?

When I used one suction cups did stick well to my window. I would try using nothing but water to clean the window and clean the cups. Maybe the cups are now contaminated. Acetone might remove any contaminants.

Thanks. As I said, I routinely DO moisten the pads before trying to get them to grab. I rub them with a wet cloth, which should clean any dirt off of them. Granted, not a lot of water seems to stick to the cups. I scrub the window with a cloth and plain water, trying to leave it a bit wet. Acetone is just going to remove oils and grease from the cup which, if anything, would just have helped the thing seal better as a suction cup.

What you are doing now is apparently not working. If it was me, I would. start fresh. For me it would mean cleaning all the contaminants, the oil, off the cup surfaces with Acetone, letting that evaporate then mounting the cups slightly wet, no lube.

I say this because my cups stick so well I have trouble breaking the seal to remove them and I have never put anything on the cups other than water.

It can’t hurt to try.

Best of luck to you.

Are the cups old or hardened from UV? Maybe try some rubber protective/restoring product.

I have a similar loader and it helps to align the pivoting suction cups individually so they are flat on the glass. Don’t rely on just pushing on the frame to get the two suction cups to pivot into the best alignment.
