Mapping Software for GPS

I just bought a Garmin Etrex Venture HC and wanted some advice on what type of mapping software I should buy. Are there free downloads on the internet? How about just for certain states rather than the entire U.S.

I think if you want to actually load maps onto your Garmin, you have to buy the MapSource software. If you just want to have mapping software to download tracklogs on your pc/mac, then you could use Topo! Oziexplorer, Terrain Navigator, among others…

Here is a link to a thread which discusses maps produced by a guy named Ibycus; he has some of the US done and all of Canada. I use the Canadian ones and they are awesome, and free.
