Missing kayaker at Split Rock Reservoir in NJ

And it’s not me. Missing on Memorial day and body has not yet been located.

Any idea of the water temp there? Remarkably no paddling deaths were reported around the Great Lakes area over the holiday weekend.

Was there last week and water temps did not feel overly cold. Not sure of exact temps.

We’ve had boaters disappear forever in our biggest lake here in town (a natural lake, not a reservoir, though a dam does raise the level by 5 feet). I have heard it said that it’s cold enough at the bottom that decomposition of a body occurs at a very slow pace, reducing gas production enough that in many cases a body does not float back up again. There are quite a few bodies in the lake that never floated up later on, though I think they usually do at some point. I wonder if that could be true at Split Rock too.

Split Rock is not a deep lake, at most 30 feet in a few spots.

Normally, as you likely know, however high the dam is as seen from the downstream side, that’s equal to the maximum depth.

3 days and no luck finding the missing person.

Sad

Took 3 months for the body of a kayaker who died on Narragansett Bay (RI) in January to be found.

Tyler Spink of Kalkaska, MI, capsized his rec kayak in Platte Bay of Lake MI on September 5, 2016. No life jacket His body still hasn’t been found.

His family, while still trying to deal with the loss, have become activists by placing signage at some beaches along Lake Michigan warning to wear a PFD.

Good idea.

Seems like I’ve heard something about Lake Superior never giving up her dead, when the gales of November come early

Authorities are still looking, 5 days now. The lake is not that big nor too deep, but with all the rain we’ve had, I suspect the water is murky, it’s usually fairly clear.

Body has been found, 55 year old man from Totowa, NJ.

We have specialists who locate bodies in deep water with side looking sonar. The last two were found at over 100’. Both fishermen.

RIP God bless

bodies still missing in round valley for decades, Cousteau even had a sub there many years back. Rivers temps were in the 50s around the end of May. Many years back a yaker and two canoeists lost it in a hydraulic on the Raritan river, One body never found. Two guys went over in the Raritan in town of Raritan and it was a month before the 2nd body was found. You could probably walk the length of the upper Raritan. Floatation without thermal protection at least guarantees a body will be discovered. **_Always flip a new boat and see how you do with self rescue. _*If that is a problem, hug the shore instead of heading seaward on our wide open impoundments and lakes. 50 water is a killer without thermal protection.
Paddling with someone often amounts to having someone to witness your death vs saving your life. So paddling with another person is no guarantee of safety.
Like having a warning on a ciggy pack, no one pays attention to the dangers.
