Missing Kayaker on Lake Hartwell

The storm that came through the upstate of SC yesterday evening led to the capsize of two friends kayaking together on Lake Hartwell. The information is sparse but one was able to swim to shore and the other hasn’t been located. Drive teams are searching the area at Singing Pines.

Probably no PFD on.

Indeed, for the families involved this is a difficult time. Lake Hartwell is String’s paddling waters and for many of my upstate paddling friends too. I hate to hear this type of thing when it might have been avoided. Your guess is also my guess, but that hasn’t been reported.

Hard to imagine drowning on a lake in the middle of the summer in that area.

You can panic and drown on two ounces of water. Very doubtful two went like that.

So true about drowning. I suspect one may not have been a good swimmer. It’s surprising how many non-swimmers go out on the water in boats without wearing a PFD. Still, the details of what happened haven’t been fully reported so far as I can tell.

We have paddled several storms on Hartwell and I agree that it was probably preventable.
My wife’s brother disappeared there on a diving trip when they were teenagers. Really hard on any family when that occurs.

Updated link in original post confirms no PFD. Body found Sunday in 11 ft of water , 20 yards from shore. That’s about the length of a semi truck rig.

Tragic, but it’s not like the storm hadn’t been forecast well in advance.

We’ve had several brief , strong storms recently, typically in late afternoon.
