So I’d like to do a ‘thru paddle’ as it were of the Maine Island Trail, and although I’m relatively competent in my kayak, I’d like to first take some navigation courses for those days of thick fog/zero visibility or stormy days. Has anyone in the New England area taken such a course? Any recommendations?

I Don’t Know About Courses…
But I DO know that a good GPS with coastal detail is a great tool.
Definitely take a class!
Look up Adam Bolonsky thru the North Shore Paddlers Network (www.nspn.org). He gives a good basic Nav class nad a very good GPS nav class.
You can never know too much about navigation.
