NDK Quality?

Yeah, that’s the way it should be made
Recessing the coaming makes a lot of sense on that boat. A larger “roller’s recess” wouldn’t be a bad idea, either.

So what?

What does any of that have to do with building a kayak properly? I hear he's a great guy, he's done a lot of good things in his life and he's a good kayak DESIGNER. That's all admirable, but that doesn't mean he gets a pass on shoddy boat construction.

If you were a great humanitarian, do you think your employer would/should give you a pass if you did lousy work?

coupled with some comic relief
to add to the comedy - when I went to the store to buy bb’s they were out of them. So I bought a box of shotgun shells.

Very well said!

Nice try, but…
…I don’t drink coffee.

thank you for saying that
Bnystrom, it would be easier to take you seriously if you didn’t inject personal vitriol into your opinions on NDK QC.

Screw NDK. My boat launch redistration decal won’t stay on the hull!!!

Nordkapp Balasting
Some time ago at the Gulf of Maine Sea Kayak Symposium, I recall talking with a couple of long term Nordkapp owners, both of whom mentioned adding balast to their boats when paddling unladen. One had finally given up his Nordkapp for a Gulfstream because he was tired of hauling the 50 pound weight he used to get the 'kapp to paddle the way he wanted. As I recall he had fashioned a lead weight he could affix on the floor of the boat along the keel line forward of the seat. I had recently decided on an Aquanaut, but was demoing a Nordkapp just for the experience…

only 12 more to go
I’m going to the Rough Water Symposium in June, so hopefully I’ll get a chance to meet Nigel. Maybe I should print out a copy of this thread for him. Waddya think?

you should make a t-shirt out of it
and wear it at the RWS.

Yes, he’s around

and will be wandering about NH this coming weekend. Or so the story goes. I don't think I'll bring this up though. My contribution to getting to 200.

common
8 more ranting posts and we can bury this thing and go paddling!

In summary (approaching 200)
I’ve heard that the recent boats (aside from the poly ones) from SKUK (nee NDK) have been well made. Though we’ve heard that before.

Paddle as many different boats you may like in as great of a range of conditions as possible. There are really a lot of good boats about. If you decide you want a Romany, either buy used or from a dealer who will take care of you.

actually paddling
Admittedly this is an effort to hit 200

As odd as it may sound I don’t know if “actually paddling” is essential to designing/building a good kayak. I’m sure any knowledgeable/engineer could borrow or incorporate many of today’s existing designs into a well designed kayak, especially if he/she incorporated feedback from kayakers who were testing the boat.

I say this because Leo Fender couldn’t play a note, not even one. I’m pretty sure his company was successful

After paddling a new North Shore
Polar yesterday, I can tell you it’s a very well make kayak. The whole North Shore line is apparently being stealth marketed here in the US, since so few State-side seem to know about it.

Come on we can do this!

but I want the dragon
I want that cool looking dragon sticker

Well, the North Shore boats have
some cool looking graphics, however, I am not sure that trumps ‘the Dragon’. At least they are made in the UK.

My new Romany surf is a fine boat
and I am glad I bought it. Hail to the victors valiant, hail to the conquering heros, hail, hail to Michigan the champions of the west!! GO BLUE!! Bill

here ya go
