what ever happened to sea kayaks?

I remember when…
I first started kayaking, not that long ago, and Necky’s web site really emphasized their racing accomplishments.

Sea kayaks
It seems the marketers have tried to assert that “touring boats” are the crossover/transitional boats, and ‘sea kayaks’ are the sea kayaks.

In my mind sea kayak includes both day boats (Romany, Avocet, etc) and expedition boats (Nordkapp, Explorer, etc). I tend to use ‘touring boat’ for sea kayaks at and above 17’ and ‘day boat’ for those well under 17’ - though still with all the attributes oif a sea kayak.

Those non-whitewater or non-racing kayaks that do not have the usual capabilities of sea kayaks are transitional or rec boats.

The Chatham paddles nicely
I think, anyway. Wouldn’t be my boat of choice, though. Steady as a rock and fairly responsive, but I felt like I was pushing way too much water when I was in it.

It’s kind of slow
