New launching ramp at Split Rock! NJ

Previous Put-in sucked. What a pleasure this one is.

New Jersey paddlers do it differently than Florida paddlers. I’m sure they’re just making it safer.

Fancy, but looks like you’d have to do lots of lifting to get your boat positioned. I came across this one in the Grass River Nature Preserve here in northern Michigan. I liked the hull-friendly material of the jet dock as well as the easy access along its edge. It’s connected to a wooden dock for power boats which has what looks like a kayak/SUP rack. The benches are a nice feature.

Note the absence of hand rails on the water side. (Good)

Lifting the boat to position it was not a problem. Before this was put in, getting into a boat, particularly a long one like mine, required getting into the water in an area of about 18" wide and, anything beyond that was deep water. Not a fun proposition. And when multiple boats are there, it’s mayhem. Also the parking lot is about 100 yards away and uphill. But the lake is pretty and well worth the aggravation.

Taken at Split Rock

Looks like a great place to paddle. Did a bit of research and see that it’s a reservoir. What’s the policy on swimming there? Curious if it’s as looney as NY. A relative was attending SUNY-Purchase and went swimming with friends in a nearby lake. They were ticketed by the anti-swimming militia after being told it was a reservoir. There were lots of row boats along the shore and not a single sign stating “no swimming.” Culture shock for someone from Michigan, where any body of water with an access site welcomes the public.

Swimming is not allowed, but done by some on occasion. There is a cliff that kids like to jump off of. Lake has been shut down because of them. The lake never feels crowded, most don’t paddle to the northern end, I do. Put in and takeout can get busy, but only because of the lack of space.

Looks good, nice to have a new launch option. Too many handrails on that thing, but still better than what was there, i.e. nothing. I’ve never seen otters at Split Rock, should get back there soon. It’s about the most remote feeling I can get in the water so close to NYC, especially at the north end.
