It is coming up a week from Saturday (June 3) in Jefferson NC.
It is one of the oldest races in NC, and is a down river Class I, 5 miler.
Racers go off two minutes apart and if you want you can enter several different races.
There are classes for novices as well as experts.
It is the ideal place for novices who have wanted to try their hand at racing.
The entry fee is the lowest you will find at $7, and that includes a T shirt too.
They not only give plaques, but money prizes for first, second and third places.
At the awards ceremony I have very seldom seen someone go home without a door prize and there are usually a hundred( plus or minus) competitors.
If you want more info, let me know and I can give you classes, times and whatever.
We will be going over on Tuesday to check out the river level and I can fill you in on that.
Some years you can even get to hob nob with Bald paddler, and Red Cross Randy
Cheers,

Hi Jack
Where is Jefferson NC? Is this a race that my QCC could run? If not, can you use a double paddle with an old solo canoe? I was planing to go kayak camping that weekend but… who knows.

Near Boone, NC
Jefferson is approx. 30 minutes east of Boone Nc. I have paddled this river, and would advise against using anything other than a plastic boat.
Although it is a fairly weak class one in this section of the New, there are still plenty on rocks to reap havoc on the under coating of a high dollar kayak.
That said , if you still want to race, their are outfitters that will rent boats at a fair price. The Most notable would be Zaloos Canoes(1-800-535-4027) as you enter Jefferson on Hwy 16 South. They in the past have used Old Town Kayaks which are like plastic battleships.
I have paddled both forks of the Upper New River(This River run South to North) and it is a scenic relaxing paddle.
Good Luck , Reguardless.
Hi mark
No, you don’t want to take your QCC down the New.
With that said, Nanci and I race our Kevlar ultralight light each year, but we know the river like the back of our hand.
I have toyed with racing the QCC in the past, but it would not be fair to the other racers.
No you can’t use a double paddle in the canoe race, and I have never been in a canoe race where you can use a double blade.
I usually race my plastic Eclipse in the kayak class, The Jensen(C-2) in the championship division and my daughters Wenonah Sand Piper in the solo canoe.
The race starts at Zaloos in West Jefferson where the above poster mentions and finishes at The New River State Park.
I’ll send you a private e-mail.
Cheers,
JackL
