Here’s what is going on. Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. For the record this is an older hull and buying new gunwales is not in the works. Yeah, economic times are making the wallet mighty thin so it’s time to come up with “other” approaches.

I have some thoughts as to an easier fix then replacing the gunwales altogether but if push comes to shove it can happen.

D-ring patches will sometimes peel
like that without any unusual force being applied. I’ve had carefully applied patches come loose when the canoe was hanging in the shade in my carport.
If you want that Royalex hull to be true to form, replacing the gunwales may be necessary. On the other hand, “close enough for government work” may be a reasonable goal. The boat might well paddle properly even if the gunwales are a little wavy.
