I think it’s more about teamwork in paddling a canoe through open water, a twisty river, and a set of locks to get to their camping destination…and not getting into arguments. I figured it was about 15-20 miles of paddling the first day.
On the other hand, it looks like they were in violation of Michigan and USCG requirements regarding life jackets…unless the kids were sitting on them.
One of my kids went through Outward Bound canoe program in Central Florida with good results. It’s a good program.

Most outdoor experiential learning programs are focused on developing leadership, cooperation and teamwork in outdoor settings and endeavors. Outward bound adds on the solo portion for some basic self reliance and reflection. These are often valued more than the instruction of skills in specific activities.
