NOAA nautical chart downloads

NOAA nautical charts are now available in raster version for free downloads at http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/Raster/index.htm

These are intended for use in electronic navigation systems, but there's probably a way to print them for paddlecraft use. I haven't tried.

Free charts will be availible in geoTIF format in the future.

some advice
on how to view these charts. I downloaded the viewer offered on the NOAA website, and then free trial offers from other websites, but never managed to view any chart.

Apparently …
…there are multiple photoshop plugins that allow you to import *.bsb raster files. I haven’t found a standalone program yet.
