NRS Toaster mitts leaking issue

-- Last Updated: Mar-17-12 12:54 PM EST --

Hi guys,

I just tried on new pair of NRS Toaster mitts and to my dismay they leak at the seams somewhat. Common issue with all stitched mitts/gloves? I never used stitched neoprene before due to being allergic to one of the components, but Toasters have a nice "fluffy" inner surface, so I thought I'd give them a try...

Thanks in advance.

So far…
So far, mine have not shown signs of leaking althought they still get a little wet inside. That’s my fault since I tend to dip my hands a lot when using a Greenland paddle. All the other gloves I have leak, including my Glacier Gloves and Stolquist. I’m constantly repairing them too. You just don’t get quality any more.

Figured as much…
Thanks Gary. I also paddle with a Greenland stick. Guessing I won’t bother arguing with the shop, just suffer with what I have and try to fix it. Worst leak I have is the joint point of three seams between index finger and thumb.

Toasters leak.
They are not dry gloves, as in diver’s gloves. At least for mine the seams are stitched and not sealed. Try the level 6 mitts if you are seeking mittens, they are much drier, or get some dive gloves like Deep See Dry Comfort gloves which are waterproof (at least up to the cuff).

Level Six
I’m going to check out the Level Six mitts next weekend at Paddlesport. I’m hoping the fit will be better than my Toasters. It’s tough getting a comfortable grip and I wind up with some fatigue after a few hours.

The Toaster Mitts may not be waterproof but they are by farn the warmest and dryest gloves I own.

They shouldn’t leak
Out of the package they should not leak. Those seams are glued and stitched. Try another pair or return them.

That said, very few mitts and gloves maintain their water tight seams for long with normal use. I have a pair of toaster mitts and I like them. At one time I went over all the outside seams with Aquaseal. They keep your hands warm by blocking the wind evaporation effect and having your fingers together helps a lot.

Used mine for a couple seasons now…
…and haven’t noticed them leaking. My hands get really sweaty in them though. Glacier gloves have been the same for me, although they do soak through eventually it seems. I’d take 'em back if they’re leaking at the seams when new.

Your Toaster Mitts
The Toasters are glued and blind-stitched alright and the gluing does help stop water leakage through the seams but the 2.5 and 3.5-mm thickness of the neoprene isn’t thick enough to guarantee that the seams are totally waterproof. We’ve developed seam sealing technology that we’re using in the Rogue -http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2453&pdeptid=944 and Maverick - http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2454&pdeptid=944 Gloves. They are totally waterproof. We will be looking at other gloves to use this technology on.

In the meantime you can send the Mitts back and we’ll replace them for you. Use our Hassle-Free Returns Label found on our Returns Page - http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/returns.asp?tn=12

Another mitten:
Someone on the Greenland Forum, I think, recommended Outdoor Research’s dry mittens. The current model is called Revel Shell Mitts. They are built like your bagsuit with breatheable fabric and taped seams. Put a nice high quality merino wool liner mitt inside and you’ve got comfort and warmth unmatched by neoprene. If you don’t immerse your hands past the gauntlet they’ll stay dry. They’ve extended my lower limit several degrees below the Toaster Mitt range. Keep the Toasters along with you in case the dry mitts get wet. The Toasters might be better than wet drymitts.

Thanks Clyde.

It's always pleasant to see that a company actively engages their customers on things like this. I'm impressed. And will follow up on your suggestion.

And everyone, thanks for chipping in with information, much appreciated.

I got the ones with hydro cuffs
For Christmas I got the ones with hydrocuffs as a gift and one of them leaked on the second wearing so I went back to my Level 6 mitts that are a little too small but warmer and drier. Outdoor play said they were not supposed to be dry and I could not return them anyway as I did not have the receipt.

So far I’m still happy with most of what NRS does and may try to contact them about the gloves. Outdoor play …not so happy.

If you don’t immerse your hands
past the gauntlet …

That’s always the rub
