old town 119? Advice please

I just came across an old town 119 for $300. I’ve been looking for a small solo for a while but do not know too much about this model. The owner says that it is in very nice shape and has been used very little. The only thing that concerns me is that the owner says it is about 20 years old and he thinks it is fiberglass. Is there any difference between a 20 year old 119 and the newer ones? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Better seats
My 119 is well over 20 years old. The only difference I am aware of is that the older boats had wicker seats. The new ones (I think) are molded and in my mind much less desirable. I am not sure that $300 is a great price on a boat that age when you see new ones for less than $500.

What will you do with it? For short
travels followed by fishing or lilydipping, it’s OK. But if you want to really go places, there are boats of similar length and less weight that will walk away from a 119.

better seat, simple to change

Look at my review (german) and photo of the seat and a yoke:

My 119
I bought on CL 2 years ago. 20 years old, I guess. Wicker seat. I lowered the front 2 inches and the back 1 to make kneeling easier. Not fast, but I enjoy it. Good to hook a trolling motor to an zipping around Long Pond by the racetrack.

Discovery 119
All the Discovery series canoes are rotomolded 3 layer polyethylene. None are fiberglass or royalex. The only change made since its introduction is from wicker to plastic for the stock seat. For a 12’ solo it is not light and not efficient. It is rugged, it is stable, it is great for fishing and very maneuverable in small streams. Store it out of the sun, don’t leave it tied tightly in hot sun, and enjoy it for what it is for the rest of your life. It might last that long. The price should be compared with new ones from the usual big box retailers in your area. Gander Mountain, Dicks, Cabelas, Field & Stream, etc.

Just saw a 119 at Dick’s Sporting
Goods, brand new, for $399.00…just an FYI for comparison.
