So I’m some what navigationally challenged and trying to up my game. Recently purchased a subscription to onX navigation app for hunters. It was suggested to me by Michael a random guy I met in sparkleberry. Anybody else out there using this app for paddle navigation? Thoughts, concerns, limitations?
No thoughts except I’ve paddled that route with Castoff.
I use OnX a lot. I’m an upland hunter and backcountry wanderer. On water use seems a bit strange to me, but it should serve to get to/from put in and take out locations. Knowing who owns the land you’re wanting to traverse or hunt is a major plus. The only con I can think of is OnX is portrait orientation only. It was designed with a hunter using a smartphone, not for your typical navigator.
Downloading of maps is simple, making off line use quite easy.
I used OnX out west elk hunting when we’d backpack in for days at a time. Just for sake of argument, I much prefer HuntStand when it comes to that.
I have Garmin stuff (Garmin Instinct watch, eTrex 30x GPS, android phone) and really like their software. Garmin Explore and Connect. The pic is Garmin Explore and a bunch of my previous kayak outings. And then the data is really broken down in the Connect app.
I use Relive and love it!
Well after paying 70 bucks for a subscription I’m committed to trying onx for at least a year, really like the satellite view in tight, helps with seeing water routes under the trees. For planning purposes, I wish I could put in more than waypoints and more than straight lines between them, haven’t found a drawing tool in onX. Overall a huge improvement over my Garmin etrex and google maps on my phone, I went with a recommendation from someone who was using it quite successfully in sparkleberry, no small task. I also think it is really going to help in Louisiana near Buffalo cove, another navigational challenging place for me.
there are a ton of tools on the desktop version. i can’t remember how it was done as it’s been a few years and I let my subscription lapse.
