Paddle repair

I am in the process of repairing a broken wood paddle shaft by replacing it with a graphite tube. The shaft is slightly oval and the graphite is round leaving about 1/16 void on each side. Any thoughts on filler and or adhesive?

Thanks

Darryl

Two part epoxy I understand. A little more on “thickening” with regard to the epoxy please.

Thanks

Darryl

There are various thickening agents…
…for epoxy, such as wood dust, fumed silica, glass microballoons, glass microfibers and even unscented talc. You can use these to thicken the epoxy to a paste that won’t run as it cures, so it will fill gaps. If the gaps are more than 1/8", I would suggest gluing some hardwood pieces to the blade shafts to fill the majority of the gaps, then use thickened epoxy to complete the job. If you need more information, check out West Systems’ website.
