I know of only one book by Doc Fletcher
mentioning the Shiawassee River in Michigan.
Does anyone own copies of other guides, books, etc.
that mention the Shiawassee River in Michigan ?
Jerry Dennis and Craig Date, 1986,
“Canoeing Michigan Rivers.” Describes five sections from Byron to the Flint River. Reasonable detail for the level of river difficulty. Friede Publications. I don’t know if it is in print.
I’ve only used the guidebook for the Little Platte. It seemed pretty good for that run.
Oldies but goodies
Thanks guys for jogging the memory banks .
The Shiawassee is quite navigable from Holly to Fenton
in Oakland County but I haven't seen it in Books until
Doc Fletcher released his.
A massive amount of woody debris removal has
already taken place south of Byron.
I'm positive in the near future that 40 - 50 mile
paddling runs will be common on the Shiawassee.
I've paddled 40 miles from Argentine to Corruna

Geo-tagged photos, dated, and mapped
Ive also done the 17 miles launching
at Harmon Patridge Park in Owosso
and taking out at Ditch Road in Chesaning

Up near Owosso the river is quite wide and woody debris
does not pose the maintenance issue as it does in the
narrower headwaters sections of Shiawassee River in
Oakland County.
Looks like I might have to write a book ;-)
Woody Debris… Is he French Canadian?
Canadian blood
Dad was Candadian, parents were married in Montreal.
Family owns property near Algonquin Park, Ontario
Even took a 5 day kayak class at MKC on Madawaska

Great people, great instruction - loved it
Shiawassee River is not included, but
for others looking for info on many Michigan Rivers, and if still in print, “Paddling Michigan”, by Kevin Hillstom and Laurie Collier Hillstrom offers more views for other Michigan Rivers.
