Paddling techniques history

I hope I've come to the right place to ask this question. I was gathering information regarding the history of canoing and kayaking and wondered if anyone would have any knowledge of the development of modern paddling techniques as used in sprint racing. At first I thought development seriously began with the 1936 Olympics in Europe but having realized that canoing was a demonstration sport in 1924 and that both Canadian and American paddlers did well in 1936 I've become confused.

The River Chasers, by Susan L Taft
Alpen Books Press. It has an enormous amount of the history of paddling history. It is a great reference and reads pretty well.
