Pentax W10
Had this camera for over 2 years.
Battery lasts for multiple days with heavy use.
I dropped this camera in the submerged bottom of a raft in class 5 rapids for 20 minutes and it still works like the first day I had it.
Decent pictures and video.
Pic up a used one on ebay for ~$120.
no viiefinder or LCD used …

770
I have had the Olympus 770 for a few weeks and so far it is waterproof as claimed. Sure wish someone would make a GPS like this. I carry the camera in my life jacket so it does get submerged when ever I am in the water. Have taken some photos underwater as well. So far I am satisfied with it.
Go pro
I have the GOPRO CAMERA. I took the wrist stuff off of it and glued it to a head lamp harness. It is a great way to take video of your kayaking trip. With a 2 GB card you can get 54 minutes of video footage. If you use lithium AAAs you can get 3 hours from a set of batteries. If you use akalines you will need to change them everytime you change the memory card. This camera actually takes better video than my Olympus 770.
framing
I’ve had a few different Olympus digital cameras and now a Pentax. None of the lcd’s were very good in the sun but you get used to looking for 1 object that stands out and using that as a guide for framing or the rule of thirds.
Also, there’s nothing wrong with cropping your pics. It may be time consuming but at least you’ll get the effect you want.
