Planning a 8 person Kayak Trip in Texas

Hello, I am trying to plan a bachelor party trip for a weekend in October. Could you give me some rivers that would be great for us. we are experienced backpackers but haven’t been on many river adventures. we would love for something fun and challenging but nothing too much to kill us lol
maybe something south texas?

Colorado and Brazos come to mind.
A group on the water can be a handful.
I would discourage people from alcohol and drugs on the water.
Come up with a plan for cooking meals and camp chores.
Good luck.

check out the devils river near del rio or village creek or trinity river outside of Houston. My list would be a lot longer but I’m not sure how much the hill country rivers have recovered from the flooding- perdenales, guadalupe, llano, san marcos. If you are near dallas you might enjoy the water trails at caddo lake. Texas is a big place!

Devils River is a good one but tough, you work for every mile. 3 day minimum and you have to get a permit. Llano River would be good either in Junction or Mason. I was in Junction a couple of days ago, plenty of water

stxpaddler did you run your own shuttle or use the one outfitter that does shuttles for the devils river? the commercial shuttle (expensive) seemed like the only option when I was there a few years back as there were several locked gates, also border type checkpoint on the mainroad and I was also told that paddling to the lake was impossible due to silt build up and that it was unwise to leave cars at the takeout.

Was the llano affected by flooding? I thought I saw that it was on the news. The only stretch I did was from telegraph to the state park. Have you ever been fortunate enough to do the pecos? I haven’t been able to catch it with water but that really was the river that first caught my attention due to its isolation.

Someday I’ll get back to texas and paddle some more and drag my boat some more. I think my brother and I did the devils in basically two days- 1/2 day/full day/1/2. We didn’t go all the way to the lake and I remember being really tired from boat dragging. We were told we had good water, a whopping 75 cfs. We weren’t fishing.`

The Guadalupe River is probably the most popular canoeing river in the State.

First I would stay away from the Guadalupe right now. The Devils you have to hire an outfitter they have permission to go through private land ,you are not going to make it to the lake to self shuttle. I’ve always wanted to do the Pecos and Big Ben but every time I’ve had a chance the flow is bad, I just checked the flow of the Pecos and at some places it was 10cfs lol. I talked to the person I use in Junction for the Llano and she said the river was a bit low in some spots but overall fine. You can look into the Brazos but Texas this time of the year is pretty rough. You can call TG Canoes in New Braunfels they might be able to point you in the right direction also check out his YouTube channel. If you need anymore info let me know, I myself will be heading to Missouri in October
