Erie Canal, Palmyra NY
Nice! We canoe that section regularly! More often we go from Mays Point in Montezuma up to Clyde or down to Cross lake but we still hit that section frequently! Very cool
speaking of Montezuma, are there areas to kayak in the smaller waterways there?
Lovely photo.
If you put in at Mays point the main Seneca River is bisected in numerous spots by the Clyde River as well as a long narrow trough that was a section of the original Erie Canal. There is a lot to explore heading up toward Clyde.
Howland Island is another spot to get well off the beaten path. Park at the Haiti Bridge(mosquito point) off of Rt 38 north of Port Byron. There is a dec boat launch there and you can cross the Seneca and head up around the island. That’s a longer route if you go all the way around(about 10 miles) but you can go as far as you’d like and turn back
In her glassine way,
the Sound is sitting low.
The tide has run away,
as rocks are there to show.
With a ripple from afar,
Clayaquot soon will stir.
Returns a fathom of uprising,
To greater depths all reoccurs.
Thank you very much. this info is what i am looking for so we can plan long weekends around the area.
Was that the year of the big currrent?
Almost feels like I was there.
Oops - perhaps a bit too aggressive.
Nice photo! I believe that the BC Gulf Islands received the term “Gulf” before it was realized that the inside passage was also accessible at the north end via Johnstone Strait, hence not really a “Gulf”. Not sure that is accurate.
That is my understanding as well… Captain Vancouver didn’t realize it was a Straight. I guess they didn’t have the internet back then
Don’t know. It was our first year here after moving from California.
