PVC piping for boat storage?

see mill’s post and pictures…
Those are the same brackets that I use.

2X4s
are the way to go. We have a “boat house” that houses 10 kayaks. I made “racks by notching 24” 2X4s to half depth (3/4") and the depth of the studs (3 1/2") and screwed them to the studs with deck screws (pre drill) I reinforced them with a small triangle of scrap plywood under each 2X4 “arm”. I even used white wood 2X4s to keep costs down.

1 x 4s
2 x 4s are heavier than needed. 1 x 4s are plenty strong, and depending on where you live and buy, should be significantly cheaper that 2 x 4s.

Poplar is much nicer than pine, and around here is only a little bit more expensive.

My made from an Ikea bed frame single boat garage wall rack:

Both…
I have an a-frame rack on wheels built out of 2x4s, along with some Home Depot ladder hooks on the garage wall. I have since added foam to all the arms as well.

Having it on wheels is great, plus I have room for storage between the bottom boats. If needed, I can swap out the arms for longer versions and double up on the boats.

pvc conduit
I think used 1 1/2. Just get 4 pre bent 90’s and a 10’ of pipe. Glue the 90’s together to make a U and cut a straight piece 2’ long. I drilled 2 holes in the straight piece and lagged then to the wall. I have 4 kayaks on these now for 6 years. Won’t scrap the kayak and thick wall pvc. And cheap to make.

The main thing I have against that set
up is the fact that you have to slide the boats on from the end.

I want to be able to put them on from the side or the end.

I am leaning toward wall brackets on both sides of the barn, and a “T” bar set up in the center.

thanks for sharing though.

Cheers,

jackL

Nice neat job !
That is what I will probably use in the center of the barn.

I like the shark on your boat.

I am assuming that one is yours.

You need to put a mermaid on “the brides”

What do those hooks cost ? and …
what department do you find them in?

They look perfect for the kayaks.

thanks,

jackL

Thanks to everyone for your ideas and
help.

There are a lot of good ideas and money saving tips here.

I’ll probably use a mixture of them since I am supporting both canoes and kayaks.

Cheers,

JackL

Hey JackL
The shark boat is an old kayak I keep around for beginners tdo play around in. Here is a photoshop “rendition” I did to prototype my idea.

I was thinking about adding a grey plactic shark fin in the fordeck but it might get in the way of paddling…

Good luck on your rack quest. I think a combo like the t-rack for 6 I made and those cheap bracketes on the sides will get you a dozen boats in 8 to 12 food wide shed.

probably too late to help
this is what we built:

We can pull a kayak off front or back, and off the sides, there are no corner posts to deal with.

The main structure is 4 6x6 salt treated posts in a row. The roof is under tension with internal bracing and is cantilevered off a dual ridgepole. The entire rack can and will sway 2-3 inches in 30+ wind.

The arms that support the kayaks is covered with pool noodles and then carpet remnants. It holds 18 kayaks-the FCs are inside.

wow, that is impressive
nicely done

thanks clarion
we just had kayaks canoes and rowing shells here there and everywhere…finally decided to at least get the kayaks in one spot…we did it in winter and at 3800F we had several weeks when we got nothing done at all on the project, even on sunny days sometimes the wind was just too cold to wield a hammer. but its done.

Nice job.
Mine is a full flegged barn - 14 feet x 28 feet with four windows on one side.

We are naming it “the Frog Level yacht club”

All I have left to do is install the front double doors and the windows along with all the boat hangers and racks.

I’ll see if “the bride” will put a couple of pictures on web shots and then I’ll post them.

she has been documenting our slow progress.

Paddling comes first !

Like yourself, our boats are spread all over the place right now, and some are hard to get at.

Especially irksome is the new 23 foot long K-2 which is in the middle of the family room.

JackL

size
I could not find any hooks more rhan 10 inches wide.

I did the same plus…
I put little triangular chocks at the ends of the 2x4’s to hold the boat in place and stapled some old rug remnants over the whole thing. I also cut up a few paint rollers (new ones, I think I spent 2 bucks) and slipped them over the metal brackets on the wall, so they wouldn’t scratch the hull. I don’t have to be too careful hanging the boat, as it’s all nice and cushy.

Heavy duty Arm hanger
Got an email today, and saw this thread was still active. Stopped by Home Depot to pick up dimmer switches, and I checked and they still have them They are in the garage storage/organization area.

Brand is Everbilt “Heavy Duty Arm Hanger”.

A whopping $3.97 each, and they are rated at 50 lbs each.

Sku #3069901252 with a mini 0 before and a mini 7 after.

Not showing up on the HD website.

PVC and UV
Jack, I built both PVC and pressure treatted lumber racks 9 years ago, and both were plenty sturdy. However, the PVC got so brittle from UV that it started to crack after 4 years. The other is still in good shape.

I liked PVC Rack 1
at the webshots album. If I were to make one of those I’d add wheels so you can roll all the kayaks around the shop.
