dont limit options
Dont limit your potential sources of information between those that are a canoe race and those that are a kayak race.

Canoe racing started in US and Canada decades ago and there are many many great and famous canoe races in the country…which can provide you with the same types of work and info needed…i.e sponsors, logistics, organizing members board, locations, media, safety, communications etc.

You might want to get ahold of some of the members from the Ausable River Canoe Marathon in Grayling Mich (google the race)…its been running since after WWII–there is a $50,000 prize purse and have over over 10,000 spectators at it…they have hundreds on the organizing committee.

Other races to contact and or get ideas from there wed site is:

The other two races which make up the Triple Crown of North American Marathon Canoe Racing along with the above mentioned race…and they are

Le Classique in Swinnigan Quebec

And the memorial day weekend races in Cooperstown NY.

More big races in the country include the Yukon River Quest-770km canoe and kayak race in Canada.

Texas Water Surfari-- Huge race down there.

Check out the videos on youtube of the above mentioned races.

Here is a sample:

Ausable: Good pro video of Race showing the potential and whats involved in putting the race on!!

Heres one of the most exciting starts of any sports event in the world!!!

Longest River race–

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GikqLY84OQ8&feature=related

This video by Jeff Rainken(sp?) is amazing…its during the general clinton race in cooperstown and is from the canoe itself…if you’ve never been IN a marathon racing pro-boat this is a treat to see how fast and effiecient they paddle!!!

Anyway…happy planning

keep us updated

I'd probably be interested. I'm in middle TN, and there alot of paddlers from ATL, Chatt, NC, Memphis who would probably be interested.. though most of the local south east races are quite a bit shorter than 80 miles. Keep us updated.

want to add 2 things.. I would avoid scheduling it the same weekend as Phatwater, as you might lose out on some long distance competitors. Also, is there current coming through Chilhowee? It's 'downstream' to Lenior City, but the turn back up the Little TN River is upstream, right? It would be soul crushing to be finishing up an 80 miler into current.

you are correct
It is upstream, but the current is nonexistent most days until near the dam. Hopefully they won’t be drawing down the water in any of the connected lakes or it could have a current. I would imagine the fastest current I have noticed on either lake would be about 1mph and that is after a huge rain during the early spring while tva is still keeping the levels low. Also that was up at the head waters of ft. Loudon. I’m not as familiar with tellico head waters but I would imagine there could be an annoying current towards the end. But it will be dark probably so maybe you won’t notice.

canoes & up stream
Sorry, This race is open to all canoes, kayaks and dragon boats. I will be just as happy with brand new paddlers as well. The videos of the race with a 50k pay out is cool. as far as up stream goes your only looking at about a 1/2 mile on that and that is near Chilhowee Dam. I have paddled all of Telico and the one thing I notice is when you are on that long run between Fort Loudon and almost Vonore the wind and waves are almost always going to Vonore direction. I’m working on a website and it should be up as soon as I get the race dates and cut off times. Thanks again for the information you all!
