I am starting to plan a trip down the Salmon River/ Lower Salmon river. and I am reaching out to see if anyone has done this section or even if it’s possible!
The route is as follows:
Put in: North Fork ID
Take out: Riggins ID
I have created a Gaia Waypoint route and it’s approx 150 miles. I want to take my time and do it in 12-15 days.
I’m starting to plan very far in the future (three years) to make sure I am fully prepared.
Two people in single canoes both with moderate experience on flat and white water.
Take an initial look at American Whitewater. I think that you are looking at “Salmon sections 5, 6, and 7”. Big western water ranging up to class IV and mostly rafted or run with raft support. The main (center) section is very popular and requires permits during season which require winning a lottery to obtain.
There should be a number of books on the river & the USFS may have more info.
Plenty of big western rivers have Class V rapids and some mandatory portages.
Do not blunder your way into trouble because you did not do your research.
