Out in the ocean it is worthwhile to invest in a VHF radio that can transmit your location to rescuers automatically. It is not unusual for someone to get a GPS location and then report it in the incorrect syntax and send rescuers to the wrong location. This happened to a boater off the southern California coast and it delayed their being rescued by nearly a full day.
