planning on kayaking the big bend florida salt water trail in mid january.i know my spinning outfit is not adequate (max 6 lb test) suggestions for a rod and reel combination …looking for mid price range
also any suggestions for lures
thanks stan
my preference
I use 7’ to 7.5’ spinning rods (Shimano Terramars) for reds, trout, and flounder. They are rated to throw 1/8 to 1/2 ounce and 1/4 to 3/4 ounce lures. The long length helps get the front of the rod around when a redfish runs under the kayak.
For my reels I have two Daiwa Tierras and two Shimano Stradics. The Tierras are my favorite of the two but I have not had a chance to try out the new Stradics. They are all 200 or 2500 sizes.
I use 10lbs and 12lbs braid which is about the size of 2lbs and 4lbs mono line. Power Pro line is the best of the braids I’ve ever used. To keep from cutting into the braid every time I change lures or get cut off I tie on about a 2 or 3 foot section of mono leader. For this I use 12lbs Stren High Impact. This line has some stretch to it and acts like a shock leader.
Most of my lures are DOA Cal, DOA shrimp, and spinnerbaits. I use 1/8 ounce and 1/4 ounce DOA jigheads.
