Roll Question fro Jay Babina

"failure to resolve an attachment issue"
Hmm…

In the context of rolling, would those issues be the paddler’s attachment to air/breathing, or the paddler to the kayak, or the skirt to kayak, or all of the above?

One one condition…
… and I think you know what that would be…

I play the patient?

none of the above
seems to me that the take home message to lou is get a gp, watch jay’s video over and over again, and get help from a really good greenland style rolling instructor. then practice and practice some more. rather than looking for something hidden, the problem is probably in plain sight, and a functional analysis of the behavior involved in failing to roll (remember cognition in this sense is a behavior) is all that is needed to get moving again. after that, it is all practice. can’t roll sitting at a desk. i paddle with some very good paddlers, and they are always working on something. the less accomplished paddlers spend a lot of time talking about gear. one of my teachers calls them internet paddlers. i learned to roll confidently by going rolling by myself several hours three or four times a week, and just practicing. when i knew i had it was when i could roll in the middle of the lake (too far to swim to shore) all alone by myself in crummy conditions. at that point, it was all mental, not mechanical, and so I practiced rolling in the face of fear that i would fail. A bit like going of the high dive or up a ladder if you’re afraid of hights, i.e. gradual exposure. as helen keller says, life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.

Lou - re-email me
I lost your email. sorry!

Go to connyak.org and events and come to one of our paddles. We have loads of paddlers who are experts at giving advice. We will fix anything that is going on in your life and might help you with your roll too.

I strongly believe…
that in the time it took me to read through this thread, I, or any number of us here would have this fellow rolling!

gstammer is right on, as are others here. Time to get good help, turn off the PC, and get in the water. Your next post should be telling us that you are rolling!

Have fun, and get it done…OK

Amen!
I think we’ve beaten this thread to death. I expect to be in the water for most of my rolling efforts for some time. I’ll let you guys know when I’m successful.

Lots of good advice as usual. Thanks all…Lou

rolling with skeg/rudder down
is it any harder?

rudder no, skeg yes - but barely
when a rudder is up and the kayak is upside down it provide resistance on the water. When a rudder is down and the kayak is coming right side up the rudder provides a bit of resistance too. Up or down a rudder provides resistance

A skeg that is deployed provides resistance, but not enough to matter. If a deployed skeg does prevent you from rolling it is either psychological or your roll is so weak a small puff of wind would cause it to fail.

The short answer is ‘yes, but not enough to matter’.
