Romany vrs Avocet

isn’t a fuego actually a montauk?
i think - if so - impex has them.

Don’t think so

I only had brief time in one, but like all of the Foster boats it is very efficient going forward, not really a heavily rockered boat for its length. In one aspect you could think it was I suppose - has the least primary stability of anything I've been in for a long time and compared to a lot of boats would be on its side most of the time in conditions - but I think a playboat has to be more about being designed for turning.

Montauk = Shoreline
acc to what I’ve read here & elsewhere.

The Shoreline (just that, not Shoreline Fuego) was the original design that launched North Shore in 1984. The Shoreline (FG version only) continues, w. a RM twin possibly in the works (per post here by Peter Orton.) It is 16 feet long and about an inch wider than the Fuego. It’s 48.5 lbs listed weight (conversion from kg on their website.)

The Fuego is the small paddler’s version of the Shoreline. It is branded as the “Shoreline Fuego”.

No longer listed on the NS website.

So they are very closely related, but not the same

Volume
"However, the Romany is lower volume"

Not by much, I think. I think the two boats put the volume in different places.

Cool

I'd like to try that boat!

"release this mid to late summer"

Is this in England or the US?

Inseam?
What is your inseam? That is, how long are your legs?

(I’m a guy, 180lb and 5’9’’ with a 30’ish inseam. I paddle a regular Romany.) The P&H Vela is an excellent boat but it might require a bit more attention. The Romany is nice because it’s fairly stable but it doesn’t hinder skill. The Avocet is a bit less stable.

The “scaled down” Avocet would be quite interesting to try.

Both are great boats. With either, you would really never need another boat. Note that you’d be able to do multi-day trips in these boats too.

The one thing that would distinguish between the two is fit. Definitely try the Romany LV (and the Avocet LV, if you can wait that long!).

What boat do you currently paddle?

Vela

It's my short boat, and hugely capable, but I don't think it's as good a learning platform as the Romany. It's a little more demanding on form for things like rolling and sculling, with that fading up stern requires more use of the skeg in some conditions - in sum a boat that is OK to learn in but not as totally forgiving as the Romany.

But then, a guy from a couple that was to new to paddling put up a post up mentioning that his wife fell in love at first try with a Rumour. So it's not necessary to start with the easiest boat.

I posted the original inquiry and I have
been following this thread closely. If there will be a protype of this soon I will wait to make my purchase. Thank you.
