What’s with the no motors (with exceptions) rule?

Only to have that much free time! Sigh.

Race to Alaska has a ‘no motors’ rule. (Not a ‘no using motors’ rule, ‘no motor on the boat.’) I gather that’s the vibe, if not the rule, of the Everglades Challenge, too.
