Sea Kayak Georgia's Symposium??

anyone planning on attending this one in October?

Hey medicineman
when is it. I will be at Delmarva.

Paul

Sea Kayak Georgia Skills Symposium 2006
Oct 28-Nov 1

Delmarva is Oct 6-8

I wanted to go to Delmarva but the hospital owns me that week…did think of the one at SKG until the Q-boat…so am strongly thinking about it just to get around other paddlers. Not interested in the star system per se but like all knowledge  in my neck of the woods no one has heard of the BCU or the ACA :frowning:

If the Q is delivered in that time frame may just get two birds with one stone…still hoping to go to Conn for the Strand boat late Sept. fingers crossed.

yep
me and Cindy will be there (hopefully). we’ll be teaching the Surf Zone course with Danny M from Impex. Last year was a hoot and we impressed dale (GSK- ex owner) enough to set us up again in '06.

steve

ok flatpick
maybe I’ll bite. What skill sets are necessary for the surf zone? I really want ot get my BCU 4 star as I anticipate getting the three star shortly.

Paul…(trying to figure out how to get more time off)

Dale X owner???
Just spoke with him the other day at SKG,did he sell out then employ himself?

Also question on the Stars…I love adding to my kayking enchirideon-knowledge is a good thing…but the actual BCU Star means nothing in upper east Tennessee…so if I attend this symposium please suggest what I should sign up for…or is it already defined, e.g. since i have no stars do i sit/paddle test for the first star, then wait for another symposium and repeat for star #2…i really dont know how any of this works but willing to learn

yep
a couple of employees made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and I think he’s still helpin’ out.

BCU stars, eh? probably best to go to the BCUNA website and check out the actual awards and then get an idea of where you stand. if you’re feeling pretty good about everything in 2* take a 3* training. If you feel pretty good about 3* take a 4* training. pretty much ‘most’ paddlers out there over estimate their skill level and this is WHY a BCU assessment is a good thing. it sets ya straight. and pretty much everyone will benefit from a 4* training.

far as SZ… a decent brace and comfort in your boat is all we require. their is generally 3-4 instructors so we can run a tight ratio. a roll is nice and after the course most people realize that they REALLY WANT a roll.

I had a couple ladies last year who BOTH were looking for an intro. just an intro. and they got it. 5 hrs. and not ONE swim. the folks looking to learn ‘advanced’ surf zone tricks are sometimes disappointed… their loss.

btw- georgia surf can be pretty mellow.

steve

thanks Steve
now what is ‘SZ’ ??

Next question, upon entering the BCU Star system what boat should/could I bring?

I ask because in the Wisper I’ve got solid rolls and balanced brace but its only 15’7 long. If I bring the QCC700 my screw roll is reliable but no balanced brace as of yet…since its a British thing I could bring a Nordkapp if that gets me any points (seriously) or the Q-boat might be here in time…I’ve a few syposiums over the last 5-6 years but never considered ‘the system’ but why not, being around paddlers and learning at least something I’m sure, and hiking season lasts only so long .

Surf Zone
my generic term for any course that involves the interface of swell and land.

you have access to a Nordcapp? by all means you WILL get bonus points if you show up with it. or your new Q-boat. anything with a rudder…ah…better leave that at home and rent something.

yep…all awards and ACA/BCU/whatever systems aside, a sea kayak skills sympo is about paddling with all kinds of folks, meeting new friends, seeing different techniques and learning new stuff (all over the board). something about spending multiple days in a boat with a bunch of great people just has a way of making you a more efficient, fun kayaker!

see ya there.

steve

could I bring a
Greenlander pro? would that get me points?

Paul

probably…
tho if you take the SZ course Danny (importer of Impex) would give you MORE points for the OI. I wouldn’t wanna surf either…IMO.

steve

BCNU rules
I havent had a chance to read the rules but I would assume??? a certain Star level before taking the SZ course?

But you’re right about the comradery of a common sport…a big crossover the the AT family and the get-togethers sponsored all up and down the trail…several differences though, they usually are free (example Trail Days in Damascus)and everyone freely gives up information on how to. One commonlality is the vendors, whether it be backpacks and hammocks or kayaks and paddles , they are there to promote their wares. I love it all and leave this Thursday for yet another session on the AT…

room mate?
I will be there. Does anyone have an extra room on tybee island or need someone to share rent? I will stay in Savannah if I have too.

paddle question for this symposia
OK on bringing a brit boat but what about my GP???

its been years since i touched a Euro blade and prefer not to…is this a potential problem?

i’m 85% confident i can attend this symposium

BCU Stars
I just went to the BCU website, I wanted to read thru the requirements for the various BCU Stars. I may not have searched well enough but I was not able to find any information about the requirements for each level. I am not interested in actually getting any stars, I am just curious.

Happy Paddling,

Mark

GP’s - no problemo
long as you are confident with your stick you won’t be shunned from any of the courses. In fact Tucker Wilson and Cheri Perry were there teaching GP paddling and rolling! a very popular class. I’m pretty sure they’ll be there.

see ya (85%)

steve

hope to be there
to get 3* certified.

I took the Outer Island out for a surf session this past weekend and got hammered by the surf. It broached like mad and my roll was weak making for a tough day!

Hoping to make it…
I missed Lamar’s symposium this year, so I’d like to make this one. Does anyone know of a nearby campground?

Treezrus

might be bringing
a SOF or a borrowed silhouette and the OI (or all three.
